Bishopthorpe 306-5 vs North Duffield 41 all out

Another scratch side this week with nearly all the regular side missing but ten men were duly dispatched to Bishopthorpe and the enthusiastic members were keen to field first so they got more of a game! Steve Hardy opened the bowling and struck in his first over having the inform Colin Markham caught by Robert Moore, then soon after bowling Bish number three Ross Kelly. Duffield had several chances of run outs but unluckily failed to take one and when a gloved chance to the wicketkeeper was seen by everyone but the umpire Duffield knew their luck had completely disappeared. Bish continued to enjoy good fortune when young Scott Reeves was dropped on three as he went on to a massive 133 and with another couple more batsmen gorging on the Duffield bowlers Bish rattled up 306-5 in their 40 overs. Bishopthorpes men in the runs were Scott Reeves 133, Marcus Whitmore 72 and Ian Holmes 58no the wicket takers for Duffield were Tony Moore 2-46 and Steve Hardy 2-54 with all the fielders to their credit keeping going to the end without flagging.
Duffield's reply didn't look good from the start with half the players having never strapped pads on before let alone held a bat, but they are a willing bunch and with an incentive of a free pint if they scored a run they set about their reply. Steve Hardy anchored the innings with 17 but they came up against a bowler in form in Tom Gatenby who on his own decimated the batting to bowl Duffield out for 41, Steve Hardy 17 and Tony Moore 8 with James Andrews managing 3 and a free pint. Bish wicket takers were Tom Gatenby 8-14 and Colin Markham 1-12.

Barmby Moor 36-2 vs North Duffield 33 all out

This was the first game in three weeks for Duffield and a mixture of lack of play and several players missing due to harvest meant an uphill struggle for them. Barmby are still in with a chance of the league title and once they had their foot on Duffield's throat it wasn't removed till it was all over. Duffield did at least win the toss and batted first on a wicket with very uneven bounce, but it was a steady troop back and forward to the hutch for the batsmen as they were soon reduced to 12-6 inside ten overs, Captain Tony Moore was the only batsman to make double figures as his policy of swiping at every ball paid off till one swipe landed in the hands of long off. Duffield all out for 33 in eighteen overs, Tony Moore 23 the main run maker the wicket takers for Barmby were A. Lofthouse 6-18 and David Brent 4-13.
Tea was put on hold as Barmby Moor replied, Duffield opened with Steve Hardy and Sixteen year old Robert Moore and in Moore's first over he cleaned bowled Barmby opener Garvey, Steve Hardy then struck in the next over having Ade Stancer brilliantly caught one handed in the gully by John Patrick to reduce Barmby to 17-2.   Barmby had a couple of more lucky escapes but survived to win by eight wickets. Robert Moore 1-14 and Steve Hardy 1-17 the wicket takers for Dufffield, Andrew Winn 22no the main run maker for Barmby.

North Duffield 73 all out vs Drax 216-8

Drax electing to bat first on winning the toss the opening pair of Luke Edwards and Keith Powell got them off to a good start putting on 76 for the first wicket, but at times rode their luck as the ball alluded the Duffield fielders and a couple of dropped catches didn't help the home teams cause. Trevor Britain bowling well worrying both batsmen without taking a wicket, a change of bowling saw the first wicket fall when Roy Bramley clean bowled Powell and then had the dangerous Steve Smith caught by Andy Bevan for only one. Duffield now started to take wickets as Drax continued to score steadily, but the arrival of Richard Watson changed the game into Drax's favour as he plundered the Duffield bowling scoring 78 off 42 balls including six maximums and seven boundaries. Drax reaching 216-8 off their allotted overs with Luke Edwards 45, Keith Powell 30 and Kevin Thomas 24 also in the runs, Duffield's wicket takers were Trevor Britain 3-38, Roy Bramley 2-22 and a wicket a piece for James Knibb and Craig Patrick.
Duffield's batting of late has been very frail and this effort wasn't much better as Steve Smith ripped out three early wickets and with Kelvin Brook also enjoying feasting on Duffield batsmen they were soon reduced to 21-6. James Knibb joined Dave Beilby at the wicket and the pair enjoyed a stand of 40 but Paul Smith finally mopped up the tail to see Duffield all out for 73. The main run makers for Duffield were Dave Beilby 23no, James Knibb 11 and Craig Patrick 7 the wicket takers for Drax were Paul Smith 3-14, Kelvin Brook 3-19 and Steve Smith 3-22.

North Duffield 42 all out vs Burn 46-0

Duffield re-write the record books with this display as they record their lowest York Vale score ever, even the scatter gun approach of Burn's bowlers, gifting them 15 extras didn't help much. In-between the wayward deliveries Burn's opening bowlers enjoyed the swing which was the undoing of Duffield, Adam Prescott 3-12 and Alex Webster 3-11 enjoyed the conditions, followed by Matt Smith 1-4 and G. Beavors 2-13, no Duffield batsman   made double figures.
Burn's reply started straight away with tea being delayed until later, both openers enjoyed early luck as the ball looped over the Duffield fielders grasping fingers, and it took just 12 overs for Martin Trevaskiss 19no and Ed Clark 23no to knock off the runs.
Although Duffield didn't perform on the pitch, both sides enjoyed a wonderful tea, with a variety of sandwiches, sausage rolls and cakes including scones with jam and cream all washed down with a good cup of Yorkshire tea at least Duffield didn't make a mess of that part of the game.

Clifton Alliance 92-3 vs North Duffield 90 all out

Duffield chose to bat first on winning the toss and when Trevor Britain and Andy Falkingham put 64 on the board for the first wicket it looked a good decision, with Britain punishing the wayward bowling of Clifton. But a change in the bowling by Clifton caused a dramatic collapse even by Duffield standards as the wicket's low bounce and the accurate bowling of John Bladen and Alex Wray shot out the remain batsmen for 90. Bladen taking 6-13 and Wray 4-16, the main run makers for Duffield were Trevor Britain 34, Andy Falkingham 14 and James Knibb 9.
Clifton buoyed by their bowling success were soon knocked off their perch when Trevor Britain and Andy Falkingham this time opened the bowling, reduced them to 31-3 and it could have been worse as Paul Walton was dropped twice before he and Rob Thorpe steered Clifton to victory inside seventeen overs. Walton rode his luck to finish 43no, with Thorpe 15no the wicket takers for Duffield were Andy Falkingham 2-28   and Trevor Britain 1-17.

York University Staff 178 all-out vs North Duffield 166-8

Duffield were in trouble before the start of play as several players were unavailable, and with one of their number going to the wrong ground never to be seen again left them with nine players, including the local barmaid an inspired pick for team moral. Uni Staff batted first on winning the toss to try to take advantage of Duffield's lack of numbers but Duffield were soon sending them back to the hut as Craig Patrick struck early, backed up by some outstanding catching, including a boundary catch by sixteen year old James Knibb to dismiss Mohammed Hussein - Staff's explosive opener, one of three pouched by him. Staff continued to hit boundaries but the introduction of the veterans Roy Bramley and John Patrick saw the wickets tumble and they were shot out for 178 in 34 overs. Staff's main run makers were M. Hussein 48, M. Saeed 46 and F. Ahmad 34, Duffield's wicket takers were led by John Patrick 4-30, Nick Hatfield 2-12, Roy Bramley 2-35 and a wicket a piece for Craig Patrick 1-26 and Steve Hardy 1-75.
Duffield's reply started badly with Captain Tim Smith and James Knibb both dismissed with only three runs on the board, John Patrick joined Dave Beilby at the crease and the pair put on 35 for the third wicket when Patrick went for a steady 22. Duffield's middle order inspired by this stand all contributed as they played round the rock, Dave Beilby, Nick Hatfield made a stylish 28 and Steve Hardy helped Beilby to get Duffield to 112-5 and even the barmaid Martene Wilson managed a run towards the target. The last pair came together with 62 still require and they very nearly got them, Roy Bramley rolled back the years as he helped Dave Beilby to get within 13 runs of victory when an outstanding caught and bowled by Salaman Sayed saw Bramley dismissed. The main run makers for Duffield were Dave Beilby 43no, Roy Bramley 32, Nick Hatfield 28 and John Patrick 22, The main wicket takers for Staff were S. Sayed 3-50 and M. Iqbal 2-33.
The club would like to thank the Kings Arms, North Duffield for sponsoring the match ball and for the use of their barmaid Martene.

York University Staff 122-5 vs North Duffield 121-7

The match was reduced to thirty overs a side in this second round HPH Cup match as rain didn't allow play till 3.00pm, Duffield batting first on a covered wicket but with a very wet outfield which made scoring boundaries difficult. Trevor Britain opened with Steve Hardy as Duffield were six regular players down due to a wedding, the pair put on 82 for the first wicket with Britain being the dominant partner making a classy fifty but the run rate never got above three an over and Duffield were grateful to Uni staff for donating 32 extras in their final total of 121-7. The main run makers for Duffield were Trevor Britain 52, John Patrick 14 and Steve Hardy 9, the main wicket taker for the Uni Staff was Richard Waites 4-39.
Staff's reply started badly as ten man Duffield enjoyed an early success when Steve Hardy induced an edge to wicketkeeper Trevor Britain, who was standing behind the stumps for the first time in a match. Duffield enjoyed further success as they continued to bowl a tight line well backed up by some excellent catching, the pick of which was by 12 year old David Buckley, playing his debut for the club, taking a skier down at third man. Uni Staff still held the upper hand though as opener Suleiman Syed almost single handedly scored the runs required, benefitting from an ever quickening outfield as he hit eight boundaries before being trapped LBW for 48 by Robert Moore. Uni Staff running out winners in the end with nine over's to spare, the main run makers for them were S.Syed 48 and K.Ghani 36no, the wicket takers for Duffield were Robert Moore 2-23, Steve Hardy 2-37 and John Patrick 1-30.

North Duffield 111-9 vs Bishopthorpe 117-5

Duffield asked to have first knock after losing the toss on a drying wicket, which turned out to be very helpful to the young Bish attack, Duffield duly obliged a collapse that even by Duffield standards was dramatic which saw them 11-4 by the seventh over.   Dave "Limpet" Beilby was joined by his limpet understudy Steve Hardy and the pair ground out a 35 run partnership in 19 overs, but it had the effect of wilting the Bish attack in the hot, sunny weather. Captain Tony Moore was next in when Hardy fell trying an attacking shot and his innings took advantage of the now wilting Bish bowlers, Moore struck two maximums and five boundaries in a whirlwind 42 to lift the score to 111-9 at the end of the allotted overs.
The main run makers for Duffield were Tony Moore 42, Dave Beilby 33 and Steve Hardy 12, the main wicket takers for Bish were Tom Eckart 4-17 and Scott Reeves 4-39 both seventeen year olds.
The Bish reply started well as they sent in the experienced pair of Colin Markham and Marcus Whitmore and it wasn't until Duffield turned to old stager Royston Bramley that they found success as he took a stunning one handed return catch to dismiss Markham with the score on 46. Duffield tried their best to take more wickets and the introduction of Andy Falkingham and John Patrick sparked a mini collapse but all too late as Bish ran out winners in the 29th over by five wickets. The main run makers for Bish were Ross Kelly 27, Marcus Whitmore 22 and Colin Markham 17, the Dufffield wicket takers were John Patrick 2-22, Royston Bramley 1-8, Nick Hatfield 1-11 and Andy Falkingham 1-23.

North Duffield 122-9 vs Barmby Moor 123-3
It was down to some hard work by the groundsman that this game took place at all after heavy overnight rain and it was Duffield who were asked to bat first on the damp track on losing the toss. Trevor Britain opened with Andy Falkingham having returned from his half term holiday, but disaster struck early as Falkingham received an unstoppable shooter when the score was on ten. Dave Beilby joined Britain and the experienced pair slowly built a 32 run partnership that was until Britain unluckily played on when well set, the rest of the side then played round Beilby as the sides anchor raising the score to 93-9. The last pair of Steve Hardy and Roy Bramley then defied Barmby maximum bowling points by steering Duffield to the end of their allotted overs with a stand of 30 which included a mixture of big hitting and some quick singles which seemed to bamboozle the Barmby fielders, Duffield finishing on 122-9. The main run makers for Duffield were Dave Beilby 22, Steve Hardy 16no, Trevor Britain 16 and Roy Bramley 14no, the pick of the Barmby bowlers were David Brent 6-18 and Alan Wright 2-24.
Barmby's reply started slow as Steve Hardy and Trevor Britain bowled a nagging length which was difficult to get away, Britain was outstanding bowling ten overs for only 18 runs and was unlucky not to take more than one wicket. Barmby batted nervously as they slowly edged their way to the target, Duffield trying seven bowlers in their search for wickets as Barmby finally reached their target in the 31st over to win by seven wickets. Barmby's main run makers were Andrew Winn 38no, B. Shepherdson 29 and Mike Brent 28no, the wicket takers for Duffield were Trevor Britain 1-18, Craig Patrick 1-19 and Steve Hardy 1-28.

1st Round HPH Cup

Askham Bryan 58 all out vs North Duffield 119 all out

Duffield batting first after losing the toss on a pudding of a wicket with an interesting bald patch in the middle caused by rabbits using it as a toilet, after the removal of the rabbit droppings Duffield started well with both Tim Smith and Andy Falkingham scoring freely. Most of the Duffield batsmen managed to make runs without anybody going on to make a big score, Dave Beilby and Tony Moore enjoyed a quick fire stand of 30 but Moore managed to run himself out when well set. Duffield scrambled to 119 all out at tea, the leading run makers were Dave Beilby 28, Andy Falkingham 19, Steve Hardy 16no, Askham's attack was led by Mark Grewer 4-28, Pete Wood 2-13 and Chris Copeland 2-42.
Askham's reply started badly as young 16 year old Craig Patrick struck in his first over sending back the dangerous Mark Grewer, with Steve Hardy also enjoying early success, Duffield were all over the second division leaders like a cheap suit. David Knight tried to counter attack for Askham but Hardy had him caught behind by the impressive Dave Beilby and then Robert Moore held on to a skier to remove Askham Captain Pete Wood. Duffield changed bowlers and the wickets kept tumbling as John Patrick and 16 year old James Knibb finished off Askham who were shot out for 58. The main run makers for Askham were David Knight 20 and Pete Wood 13, the main wicket takers for Duffield were Steve Hardy 3-17, Andy Falkingham 2-14 and a wicket a piece for Craig Patrick, Robert Moore and James Knibb all who are 16 year olds.

A first win of the season for Duffield and a spot in the quarter finals awaits them and confidence to take into the next game.

Drax 272-2 vs North Duffield 131-8

Duffield travelled to Drax for this encounter with two bowlers light, both off to watch York City at Wembley, and it would prove to be costly as the Drax batsman were in great form. Duffield started well with sixteen year old Craig Patrick once again worrying both Drax openers with his left arm swing, well supported by Steve Hardy at the other end but they were unable to make a break through and soon the Drax batsmen started to dominate the bowling. The opening pair of Luke Edwards and Keith Powell both raced to fifty as Duffield used every available bowler they had, even when they managed to create a chance the ball fell short of the fielders. The pair put on 249 for the first wicket as first Keith Powell passed his 100, then a few balls later Luke Edwards scored his, Duffield did finally manage to take a wicket as sixteen year old Robert Moore trapped Powell LBW and then clean bowled Watson in his next over. Drax finishing on 272-4 with Keith Powell 132( including five sixes & 18 fours with his hundred off 84 balls), Luke Edwards 114 no(including seventeen fours with his hundred off 122 balls) the only wicket taker for Duffield was Robert Moore 2-47.
Duffield's reply started well with Tim Smith and Dave Beilby, back from his sabbatical, opening the innings, Smith being the dominant batman as he plundered the Drax attack with some glorious stroke play. The pair put on 57 for the first wicket when Smith was bowled by Paul Smith for 46, Duffield now realised the chance of getting the runs was gone as the wicket became uneven in bounce so it was a chase for batting points instead all the batsmen made a few as they batted round Dave "Limpet" Beilby and together they put 131 on the board by the time the overs ran out, securing three points. The main run makers for Duffield were Tim Smith 46(including nine fours), Dave Beilby 31no and Steve Hardy 16 the main wicket takers for Drax were Paul Smith 4-23 and R. Watson 2-15.

North Duffield 79 all out vs Hemingbrough 220-5

The first game of the season at the Duffield Oval saw local side Hemingbrough visit, on winning the toss Hemingbrough chose to bat and were soon in trouble at 12-2 after six overs. Steve Hardy taking both wickets as he and Craig Patrick found seam and swing movement early on, Matty Milburn and Nathan Briggs dug in for Brough and both were lucky to survive as the pitch started to flatten out. Craig Patrick once again had to be removed from the attack at a crucial stage having bowled his allotted over's for a sixteen year old and at the half way mark Brough were 57-2. John Patrick removed Briggs soon after the drinks break for a scratchy 30, which saw Matty Clark join Milburn at the crease, by now the wicket was offering nothing to the bowlers and the Brough batsmen started to savage any wayward bowling, the pair put on 122 for the fourth wicket as both passed fifty. The Hemingbrough innings closed on 220-5, having scored 163 in the last twenty over's, the main run makers for Brough were Matty Clark 77(including 4 six's & 8 fours), Matty Milburn 73( including 1 six & 5 fours) and Nathan Briggs 30. Duffield's wicket takers were Steve Hardy 2-24, Roy Bramley 1-22, John Patrick 1-40 and Craig Patrick 1-62.

Duffield's reply started badly as opener Andy Falkingham fell for a duck in only the third over, unluckily playing on to the stumps, Tim Smith was next in but was soon bowled by Glen Crouch, who followed up having young James Knibb trapped LBW soon after. That brought John Patrick to the crease to join Trevor Britain, the only two surviving batsmen from last year and the last hope for an expectant Duffield posse, the pair put on 20 for the fourth wicket as they started to ask questions of the young Brough attack, but with a massive target to chase they both fell forcing the pace. Nick Hatfield and Roy Bramley both enjoyed a lusty blow a piece but the innings went out like a candle in a force nine gale as Duffield were bowled out for 79. Duffield's main run makers were John Patrick 25 ( including 3 fours), Trevor Britain 21( including 4 fours) and Nick Hatfield 10, the wicket takers for Hemingbrough were Ricky Noble 4-39, Robert Scarr 3-21 and Glen Crouch 2-17.

The decimation of the side over winter has left Duffield facing an up hill struggle this season but the introduction of some young players hopefully will see cricket continued to be played at the Oval in the future and with great support again from the Duffield posse, all who seemed to have played for England at some point!, the club continue to enjoy their village cricket.

Burn 116-2 vs North Duffield 112 all out

It was a new look Duffield team that took to the field for the first game this season as they travelled to Burn, Duffield batting first started steadily as Andy Falkingham and young James Knibb opened the innings. The pair put on 23 for the first wicket before Knibb was caught at mid-on for one, although he showed some promise while at the crease, Steve Hardy joined Falkingham and the pair eased the score up to 33 before Falkingham departed for a well made 20. Duffield continued to score slowly without ever looking like breaking free, as wickets started to fall, Captain Tony Moore marshalled the innings towards the century mark, unfortunately running out his son Robert on the way. Duffield eventually all out for 112 in the 39th over. Duffield's main run makers were Tony Moore 28(including four 4's), Andy Falkingham 20(including three 4's), Nick Hatfield 14 and Steve Hardy 12, the wicket takers for Burn were A. Presscott 5-42, A. Webster 2-23 and the pick of the bowlers was G. Parker 2-4 off seven over's including four maidens.
Burn's reply started slowly as sixteen year old Craig Patrick worried both openers with his left   arm swing bowling and as a result Burn tried to take a quick single, but Patrick swooped in his follow through and effected the run out of the dangerous Martin Trevaskiss with a direct hit, to see Burn at 3-1. Burn then consolidated their innings as Duffield were forced into a bowling change as Patrick finished his allotted bowling spell, because of his age limit. Burn eased their way to 31 before losing another wicket to a well judged catch by Roy Bramley off the bowling of Steve Hardy but that was the last success Duffield enjoyed as Rob Webster joined opener E. Clark at the crease. Captain Moore turned to spin in an attempt to take a wicket but it backfired as Webster blasted 23 off the over as he raced to fifty and took Burn to an eight wicket win, he was well supported by Clark who finished 31no. Burn's batting hero's were R Webster 65no, E Clark 31 and M Webster 16 , Duffield's only wicket taker was Steve Hardy 1-33.

North Duffield's match ball sponsor today was the Kings Arms Public House at North Duffield and thanks go to them for their support
